Access control modelBeginner

Role-Based Access Control

Role-based access control assigns permissions to defined job or functional roles and then assigns identities to those roles.

What it means

RBAC can simplify administration when roles reflect real work and remain narrow enough to avoid excessive access. Role engineering, ownership, conflicts, exceptions, and periodic review determine whether the model remains useful.

Why it matters

Well-designed roles make access more consistent and easier to explain than thousands of individual permission decisions.

Practical focus

  • Define roles from actual responsibilities
  • Separate high-risk and conflicting duties
  • Limit direct user entitlements
  • Review role membership and unused permissions

Common mistakes

  • Creating a unique role for every user
  • Allowing broad roles to accumulate permissions
  • Treating job title as sufficient proof of need
